Three Sisters: Faith, Hope & Charity

If you received one of my more recent postcard designs in the mail, you might have noticed three crocheted dogs on the front and back. I guess you could say I adopted them as my shop buddies or business mascots. Since most of my customers work in the pet industry, I thought it would be fun to incorporate these characters into my postcard design. They haven’t found their way to my website until now. I feel kind of rude not introducing them yet!

These three dogs are sisters. Sure, they are different dog breeds, so being siblings seems impossible. But there are such things as blended families and pet adoptions, right?

I decided to name them Faith, Hope and Charity. I live in Central Oregon, and one of my favorite places to hike is in the stunning Sisters Wilderness. The pinnacles and namesakes of the wilderness area are the three mountains South Sister (Charity), Middle Sister (Hope) and North Sister (Faith). Broken Top and Mt Bachelor are close by and also worth mentioning.

The three connected mountains are named in honor of a famous verse from the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13:13:

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

“Charity” in this verse is typically translated as “love” in modern Bible translations. Charity is the chihuahua in the photo. Faith is the chubby dog with a round face on the left. Hope is the smallest dog in the middle. You “dog experts” out there might be able to help me determine which breeds Faith and Hope are! Some creative license, imagination and subjectivity might be necessary since their markings and shapes are a little “fuzzy.”

Ironically, just as South Sister the mountain is the tallest, Charity the dog is also the tallest of the three. Normally chihuahuas are among the smallest dog breeds. If Hope in the middle is a Saint Bernard like I suspect she might be, then their relative sizing is even more comical since she’s the smallest of the three sisters! Smallest Saint Bernard ever.

The three sisters keep me company in the shop when I’m working on sharpening your clipper blades and scissors. They might also appear in random photos from time to time. Someday I might have to get a photo of them while hiking on their namesake mountains!
